RCD Espanyol B seal survival
A 2-1 win over Girona B brings three vital points
Espanyol B defeated Girona B 2-1 at the Ciudad Deportiva Dani Jarque, securing mathematical survival as a result.
The first half was evenly matched, with Espanyol starting strongly and forcing five corners in the opening five minutes. Girona, after the first quarter of an hour, managed to finally break into the Espanyol half and had a good chance to take the lead, but Llorenç Serred made an excellent save.
In the final minutes before the break, the teams were more evenly matched, and just when it seemed the game would go into halftime with the scoreline goalless, Miguel Londoño pounced on a loose ball amidst a scramble and fired it into the back of the net.
In the second half, coach Raúl Jardiel made a tactical change, withdrawing an attacking midfielder and opting for three centre-backs and two wingbacks.
The second goal came from the right flank shortly before the hour mark. Jan Peries and José Ángel combined, with the latter setting up Almansa for an easy tap-in.
For the last thirty minutes, Espanyol defended well, and threatened on the counter-attack.
Girona scored from a free kick in stoppage time, adding tension to the final minutes, but Los Pericos held on for the victory.
