Three players from the RCD Espanyol Academy in Helsinki called up to the Finland national team
Three young players from the RCD Espanyol Academy in Helsinki have been called up to the Finland national team. They are Tobias Kinnunen (2011), Leo Wevelseip (2011) and Onni Karhu (2011), all of whom have been developed within the project that the club has been running in the Nordic country since 2019.
The three players have featured in a series of international matches in which the Finland national team faced Scotland, Hungary and Cyprus. The results were: victories against Hungary (1–0) , and a narrow defeat against Cyprus (0–1) and Scotland (2–1). In terms of minutes played, Tobias accumulated 179 minutes, Leo 90 and Onni 153 minutes.
Leo has been part of the academy for more than three seasons, while Tobias and Onni have been involved for one season. All of them train under the guidance of the RCD Espanyol Technical Director in Helsinki, who applies the club’s development model adapted to the local context.
Although this is the first call-up for these three young players, it is not an unprecedented milestone within the project. In 2023, Tarmo, also a player from the Espanyol Academy in Helsinki, was called up to a national team.
These call-ups reinforce the project’s philosophy: an ambitious, excellence-driven development model aimed at helping each player reach their maximum potential. RCD Espanyol continues to consolidate its position as a benchmark, not only in Barcelona but also across its international academies.
