Special 125th anniversary shirt available now
The shirt pays tribute to the club's original colour scheme
RCD Espanyol have unveiled a commemorative 125th anniversary shirt, in tribute to the early pioneers who created the club in 1900.
The first official reference to Espanyol's formation appeared on October 28th, 1900, in the newspaper Los Deportes, announcing the creation of a new sports society called the “Sociedad Española de Foot-ball” This article, considered the club's founding document, reflected the growing passion for a sport that was beginning to take root in Barcelona:
"The enthusiasm among football fans is so great that they are growing in number every day; for the enthusiasm for this sport is spreading so extraordinarily that a new society has been formed in recent days, called the “Sociedad Española de Foot-ball” made up of many distinguished young men."
According to Ángel Rodríguez, Espanyol's founder, the team's first colours were yellow and black. He explained that "One of our members was a textile manufacturer, and he gave us some yellow pieces to make the kits."
Even the newspaper La Veu de Catalunya described that first kit from 1900 as "yellow and black, complete with a beret."
The first known photo of the club was taken at the end of the year, in front of a fledgling Sagrada Familia.
125 years on, RCD Espanyol, with the help of the RCD Espanyol Foundation, are bringing back those original colours in this commemorative shirt, with a retro style and a meticulous design that combines history and elegance. Yellow and black once again feature prominently in a unique piece.
Its details include the four-leaf clover pattern, a decorative element of the Art Nouveau style featured in that first article in Los Deportes, as well as the full reproduction of the founding article on the chest.
The shirt will be available starting this Monday online store and from Wednesday in all other RCDE Stores. Club members will enjoy a 10% discount off the retail price.
In addition to the commemorative shirt, RCD Espanyol have launched an exclusive line of 125th anniversary merchandise that pays tribute to the club's history and original colours. These include a black mug, a yellow card holder, which symbolizes Espanyol's beginnings, and a yellow badge holder, a commemorative water bottle; and a black scarf.
