Monchi: "Sarabia is the ideal coach to get the best out of the squad"
The sporting director general talks to the media
RCD Espanyol Sporting Director General, Monchi, held a lengthy press conference on Thursday to explain the recent change of coach at the club, with the dismissal of Manolo González and the hiring of Eder Sarabia.
The decision came after the Copa del Rey defeat in Sestao, and Monchi noted that “It is always very difficult to find the right moment to deliver such negative news. Having to let a coach go is a failure on my part. I had complete confidence in his work, but the results weren’t good. It was all very painful. The journey back home was extremely difficult, but I have spoken with Manolo again -and continue to do so- with respect and affection, even though the situation remains painful for me. I want to praise him both personally and professionally.”
He revealed that he chose Sarabia “because I believe he is the ideal coach to turn our results around and get the best out of the current squad. I know he will need time, but with 28 league games remaining this season, there is sufficient opportunity to reverse this situation.”
“The winter transfer window is still a long way off, so we will have to wait. This squad has the raw material to adapt to the new coach’s vision.”
Monchi underlined that specific milestones have been set for Sarabia.
“The immediate priority is to move out of our current position, lay the groundwork for medium- and long-term growth, and ensure the team develop a clear, recognisable identity.”
“From the very first moment we contacted him, he conveyed his enthusiasm and eagerness to work on a project like ours. He is keen to return to coaching and arrives with great excitement to achieve significant goals,” said Monchi.
Whilst Sarabia is already registered as coach, he arrives with a two-match suspension carried over from his time at Elche. The first match of that ban will come this Friday, with Sergio García taking charge against Villarreal CF.
“We are very satisfied with Sergio’s work and his results, but he needs to progress through all the stages of his development. It wasn’t the right time to rush a move to him taking over the first team permanently. The priority right now is tomorrow’s game, in which there are three very important points at stake.”
Monchi wrapped up the press conference by saying “The first person who should be held accountable is the sporting director. I feel responsible for the current situation. We all need to give more -myself included.”
