Monchi: "I'm completely satisfied"
The sporting director looks at the summer activity by the club
With the summer transfer window closed and RCD Espanyol's two latest signings presented, sporting director Monchi assessed the business done by the club in recent months.
“We wanted to revamp the squad and we made seven signings, in addition to the loan deals that we agreed. As the weeks went by, the names that filled the available spots changed, but behind every Plan A, there was a Plan B or C. We are satisfied with the transfer market," he told journalists.
“We did what needed to be done. Everything Alan Pace told me to do has been done. I think we slightly exceeded the salary cap due to Kike García's injury, but I'm completely satisfied. I have no complaints whatsoever. I was told what to do and it has been implemented. We have achieved 100% of what was planned," he continued by saying.
“We have complete confidence in Manolo González. He’s a well-liked person who has delivered in his three seasons at the club, but here I’ve discovered a pressure that should motivate us. We have the pressures of a big club, which -if managed well- is a good thing.”
"I want the team to finish as high up the table as possible, for the young players to show development, and for the squad to grow. I didn’t come here for three months. I signed a three-year contract, and I hope the team continue to evolve and have a foundation to keep growing. The fans want results. You can’t ask them for patience. We have to try to achieve growth step by step. Trust isn’t earned with words, but with actions. We have to earn that trust gradually.”
He also highlighted that “the goal is to improve on what we did last year. There will be a lot of competition, and I think we have the tools to have a more relaxed season than the last few, but I can’t guarantee it because this isn’t an exact science. The club need results and to grow."
Finally, he took the opportunity to thank "everyone at the club, from Alan Pace, Brad, and Mao to the finance department, the medical staff, and all the other departments, for their support. Without their work, it would have been difficult to make this happen.”
