Monchi: “85% of the squad is already in place"
The Sporting Director reviews the summer activity behind the scenes
RCD Espanyol de Barcelona's General Sporting Director, Monchi, reviewed the latest developments surrounding the first team ahead of the start of LaLiga -and explained that work on completing the squad continues apace.
“Our job is to try to put together the best possible squad. We are working within all the different parameters, but the market establishes certain guidelines that you have to follow. We have identified the players we want, but, as things stand today, the circumstances are not right to complete those deals," he told journalists.
He underlined his confidence in the current group and pointed out that “85% of the squad is already in place. I would have liked to have it 100% complete, but sometimes you have to wait in order to find the player you really want.”
The Sporting Director insisted that “the team's performance will not change just because a player arrives between now and Sunday. We have to trust the foundations we already have in place, and try to ensure that the team competing is the one we saw for 70 minutes in Coventry.”
“We have to keep working to improve the squad in every area we believe is necessary and within our reach.”
Reflecting on his first few weeks at the club, Monchi expressed his satisfaction.
“It has been a motivating summer. I have found RCD Espanyol a club where I feel comfortable and where I am really enjoying working with the professionals at La21, those at Cornellà and with the owners.”
Monchi also reiterated the ambition with which he is approaching this new chapter in his career.
“As I have said from day one, we have to look upwards. Uncertainty is inherent in the world of football, and the only way to dispel doubts is through results," he underlined.
“There is one judge here, and that is results. I have 26 years of experience as a professional, plus another ten as a goalkeeper. I have been through preseasons in which we won everything and things did not go well afterwards, and I have also experienced the opposite. I know our fans will expect us to win matches. In football, happiness comes from results. I'm only happy when I win.”
