Match Report: 1-2 defeat away to Real Sociedad

Roberto Fernández' goal not enough for a share of the points

RCD Espanyol suffered a 1-2 loss away from home against Real Sociedad, with the winning goal in an evenly-matched tie coming in the second half. Roberto Fernández scored the goal for Los Pericos.

The game began with intensity from Manolo González’ men, but lacked good fortune. A series of rebounds and slip-ups allowed Real Sociedad to take the lead in the 4th minute: Mikel Oyarzabal drew the attention of the entire Espanyol defence and, at the last moment, assisted Barrenetxea, who placed the ball out of Marko Dmitrovic's reach to make it 1-0.

Los Pericos struggled to find a way to create any real danger in front of Alex Remiro's goal. The home side, comfortable with their lead, hovered around the area without providing too many scares, except for an Igor Zubeldia header that Dmitrovic brilliantly tipped over the bar for a corner.

The match seemed firmly in Real Sociedad’s control, but right in the final minute of the first half, Javi Hernández had a moment of inspiration. He sensed that Roberto's run into the box could be picked out, and delivered a long, precise cross. The striker met it with a first-time shot, and found the back of the net.

Espanyol came out with more courage and focus for the second half, and began to create more chances. Javi Hernández racked up another opportunity with a free kick that grazed the top corner.

Manolo González's men continued to build attacks and create depth, enjoying their best spell of the game, but, as with the first goal for the home side, Oyarzabal produced against the run of play. The recipient of his assist this time was Oskarsson, who finished off.

It was time to dig deep again, with teamwork and concentration. Moscardo tested Remiro from outside the box in the best chance, as RCD Espanyol encountered a resolute home side determined to control the game.

Despite the final scramble for goals, Los Pericos went home emptyhanded.
