RCD Espanyol Femení earned an impressive 4-0 win over Real Oviedo Femenino on Saturday.
Back at the Ciutat Esportiva Dani Jarque following the international break, Espanyol were looking to rise up the table with a first home win of the season. After being sidelined for the last few weeks, Emily Dolan returned from injury in goal.
Once Espanyol managed to settle down, they would fire chance after chance towards the visitors’ goal. Daniela Caracas saw her snapshot bobble wide, while Isina’s volley at the other end came close for Real Oviedo.
Espanyol missed two guilt-edged chances from close range, but it proved to be third time lucky just after the half hour mark. A dangerous inswinging ball from Luzu arrived perfectly to Carol Marín, whose excellent header into the bottom corner put the Femení ahead.
The hosts’ momentum had now been rewarded with a goal, with Luzu herself coming close to scoring. They looked dangerous every time they crossed into the opposition half, complemented by several piercing passes and attacks down the right flank.
Espanyol doubled their lead before the break, with a fantastic through ball being met by Luzu out wide. A simple square ball put it on a plate for Pixu, allowing an even simpler finish past the keeper to cap off a superb team break.
It would be understandable if the Femení needed time to go again at the start of the second half, but they wasted no time at all and were hunting for more.
Judit Pablos picked up the ball out wide and sent a gorgeous ball into the path of Pixu. Once she beat the onrushing Solana Pereyra, a delicate lob into the back of the net put Espanyol in cruise control and the forward with her second of the afternoon.
Real Oviedo did not give up and continued to push, though Dolan made some decent saves to keep the visitors at bay. But Espanyol would well and truly put it beyond doubt, as a stunning solo effort from Sara Extremera was buried into the bottom corner to seal a first home win of the campaign in style.
