R.I.P. Xabier Azkargorta

RCD Espanyol mourn the loss of our former coach

Xabier Azkargorta, coach of RCD Espanyol between 1983 and 1986, has passed away.

Born in Azpeitia in 1953, he took over at the club at the age of just 29, making him one of the youngest coaches in the history of the Primera División. He was in charge of RCD Espanyol for 134 matches-the seventh most in club history-, achieving 51 wins and 39 draws.

He also served as a mentor to Mauricio Pochettino during the Argentinian's managerial spell at the club.

Azkargorta also led Bolivia to the 1994 World Cup in the USA, and had an extensive coaching career in South America.
