Official statement
During the match played this past Sunday at the Estadio Martínez Valero between Elche CF and RCD Espanyol, Omar El Hilali approached the referee, Iosu Galech Apezteguia, in the 78th minute to inform him that he had been the recipient of a discriminatory and racist comment from an opposition player. The referee immediately activated the anti-racism protocol and stopped the match for several minutes, during which he informed the coaches, captains, security coordinator, and match delegate of the incident.
In light of the information that has emerged in recent hours, RCD Espanyol express our strongest condemnation of what happened and reiterate our commitment to respect, equality, and coexistence both on and off the pitch. We also condemn any behaviour that violates the dignity of individuals, including those based on origin, skin colour, or personal beliefs, and express our full support for Omar El Hilali.
While we await a full clarification of the facts regarding the incident, we respect the procedures established to rigorously determine what happened, guaranteeing the right of all parties to be heard. At RCD Espanyol, we will continue to promote an environment free from discriminatory behaviour and work to ensure that sport is a true example of inclusion.
