Match Report: RCD Espanyol win 2-1 against Sevilla FC
Los Pericos emerge victorious at the RCDE Stadium
RCD Espanyol secured three important points in their Monday night fixture against Sevilla, winning 2-1 through goals by Pere Milla and Roberto Fernández.
In their first game back from the international break, RCD Espanyol came out with their usual intensity for home matches. The first ten minutes were a barrage of attacking football, showcasing their full attacking arsenal.
Cristian Romero tried his luck with his right foot in the first real chance of the game, and Kike García, in a starting role up front, came very close to scoring with a shot that grazed the post.
However, the clearest opportunity fell to Pere Milla on a counterattack, which he was put through on goal and had his effort saved by the goalkeeper - although the flag had already been raised for offside.
Despite their brilliant start, Espanyol failed to take the lead, and the match entered a more turbulent phase. Sevilla began to dominate possession and exerted a much greater attacking presence.
Marko Dmitrović, who during the international break had celebrated the birth of his first child, became the hero for Espanyol, making several impressive saves.
A shot against the post from Sevilla’s Akor Adams also provided a threat, as the visitors began to control the latter stages of the first half and had several set pieces in quick succession.
Espanyol needed to reset and regain their composure, and did so during the interval. They came back out organised for the second half, and stepped up their play.
The first goal came just two minutes into the second stanza, as Tyrhys Dolan delivered a ball in with his left foot, met by Pere Milla with an excellent header to make it 1-0.
Far from sitting back, Manolo González encouraged his team to go forward and brought on Roberto Fernández to try and capitalise on any counterattacks.
Espanyol were looking for a way to seal the victory, although Dmitrović had to intervene again to clear a long-range shot from Sevilla.
The game seemed to be over after a sensational goal from Roberto Fernández, who sent in a stunning curling strike from outside the box. However, the final minutes became complicated after Leandro Cabrera turned the ball into his own net off a Marcao header.
Whilst the closing minutes were nervous, Espanyol held on and took the win at home.
