Match Report: 1-0 loss in rescheduled game with Villarreal CF
RCD Espanyol's unbeaten run comes to an end
RCD Espanyol were beaten 1-0 at the Estadio de la Cerámica by Villarreal, in a game originally scheduled for March 3rd. Having been postponed due to adverse weather, the fixture was finally played, some 55 days later.
Coach Manolo González placed immense importance on the match, with Los Pericos on a strong run in LaLiga in recent weeks.
Without clear chances, but with very clear ideas, both teams looked for ways to hurt their opponents in the first half. There were two controversial actions that were correctly resolved by VAR: First, a penalty given against Joan Garcia was overruled, then minutes later a goal by Barry was disallowed for offside.
Antoniu Roca was Espanyol's main offensive asset. He created danger, drew fouls, and participated in the team's most direct attacks, well supported by Edu Expósito on set pieces. Expósito tested the goalkeeper with a long free kick, and before halftime, Kumbulla was only just unable to connect with a good cross from Cubelles.
Javi Puado came closest to scoring with a long-range shot that almost surprised the goalkeeper.
Villarreal came out strong after the break, while Espanyol tried to ride out the storm. It was a situation similar to the one against Valencia, where they had to hold on for a draw.
A good passage of play between Roberto and Puado allowed Carlos Romero to try his luck with a shot that went wide.
Unfortunately, Villarreal did find a way to score, thanks to Yeremi Pino, and established a lead.
Manolo González brought on Jofre to give the team more direction, and RCD Espanyol persistently sought the equaliser. After several dangerous attacks, a very clear opportunity arrived for Puado, who shot just wide of the post when unmarked.
Joan García made saves from Comesaña, Ayoze Perez and Alfonso Pedraza before the end, but there would be no RCD Espanyol goal and they fell to a 1-0 defeat.
