González: "We'll keep our feet on the ground"
The coach responds to the win against Getafe CF
RCD Espanyol coach Manolo González gave a very positive assessment of the team's performance after their well-deserved victory against Getafe CF. Speaking in his post-match press conference, he told journalists: “You have to remember that they came in with a good dynamic away from home. They were the second-best team in Europe on the road, along with PSG. We lacked finesse, but sometimes it's not easy to find it against these teams. We were fortunate enough to get the 1-0 from a set piece. Then, in the second half, they pressed and were a better side, but Joan's save was key. We weren't able to make it 2-0 and kill the game off."
The coach emphasised that “it's close, but until it's mathematically confirmed, I'm not getting over-confident. We have to push. We'll be in Valencia on Tuesday. Until survival is secured, we have to keep our feet on the ground and not make mistakes. I've seen some very strange things in football. The team are getting better and better, and we're enjoying ourselves more and more. It's about time, as there are always hardships," he explained.
González insisted that “it's been a very long process of work. The players are young. The results have given us confidence, made the players dare and have clarity on the ball. The team are improving every day and continue to grow. The goal is to earn survival and begin next season with a better start.”
“Individual improvement has made the team better. We want the best for Espanyol, for the team to survive. The game against Girona was tough for us. The atmosphere inside this stadium is priceless. With the pressure we're under… being able to enjoy it is incredible,” he declared.
González also brushed off questions about a potential push for Europe.
"We're here to win games, and hopefully one day we'll be up there for that. But now it's time to be humble and not think about what we're not. The club have a great history, but we all know where we come from. This season has shown that when you let things get to your head, it hits you hard and puts you back in your place quickly."
