Former president Ferran Martorell passes away
The club mourn the loss of a key figure in the club's history
RCD Espanyol are mourning the loss of Fernando Martorell Oliveras, after the passing of the former president of the club.
First vice-president and assistant to the president under Antoni Baró, Martorell assumed the presidency after Baró's resignation in July 1989. He was responsible for calling the first democratic elections for the club's presidency, in which he decided not to run. These elections culminated in the appointment of Julio Pardo in December 1989.
Martorell first joined the Espanyol board under Manuel Meler in July 1975 and remained there for seven years, holding various positions, which he would later repeat under Baró. In his role within the sporting department, he was instrumental in making some of the most significant signings in Espanyol's history, such as those of N'Kono and Lauridsen, as well as his tireless commitment to establishing a strong Espanyol youth academy.
Many years later, his initial vision culminated in the creation of the Ferran Martorell Foundation, a project he dedicated himself to for nearly two decades, facilitating the training and development of young players at the grassroots level.
