Monchi appointed as new RCD Espanyol sporting director
RCD Espanyol announce the appointment of Ramón Rodríguez Verdejo, ‘Monchi’, as the club's new sporting director, a position from which he will lead the club's Sporting Department.
Monchi's arrival strengthens RCD Espanyol's sporting structure with one of the most recognised and prestigious executives in European football. The various sporting areas at the club will retain their current executive directors, who will now report to the new Sporting Directorate headed by him. He will report directly to Mao Ye Wu, CEO of RCD Espanyol, and to Alan Pace, president of RCD Espanyol and of Velocity Sports Partners/ALK Capital, the club's investment group.
With a distinguished career in international football, Monchi began his trajectory as sporting director of Sevilla FC in July 2000, a period in which he established himself as one of the most influential figures in sports management. After an initial run of 17 consecutive seasons at the Andalusian club, he returned in April 2019 until June 2023.
Considered one of the main driving forces behind the most successful period in Sevilla FC's history, he played a decisive role in building a project that won 11 trophies between 2006 and 2023. This includes seven UEFA Europa Leagues, two Copa del Rey trophies, one UEFA Supercup, one Spanish Super Copa, and a promotion to LaLiga.
Subsequently, he continued his career at AS Roma and Aston Villa, the latter with which he consolidated a competitive project, consistently securing European qualification and regularly participating in continental competitions such as the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League.
