Match Report: Puado equaliser earns a point against Valencia CF
The captain scores in the dying moments of a game that ends 2-2
RCD Espanyol snatched a late equaliser at the RCDE Stadium in their midweek game against Valencia CF, salvaging a 2-2 draw thanks to Javi Puado’s last gasp strike.
Los Pericos came into the game wanting to show that the defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu against Real Madrid wouldn't affect their confidence, after a remarkable start to the season. With three wins from three at home, they were hoping to extend their good run at the RCDE Stadium.
Coach Manolo González, in the build-up to the contest, made it clear that it was too early to draw conclusions and that he was not swayed by Valencia CF's poor away numbers so far this term.
With some changes to the starting lineup, as González hinted at in the press conference, Espanyol began well. Kike García and Tyrhys Dolan provided two warnings, which were ultimately both called back for offside.
The home side's initial energy was dampened by Valencia CF's approach, which began to trouble Espanyol and their lack of precision.
Valencia CF took the lead when Danjuma capitalised on the only shot on goal up to that point, beating Dmitrović.
Espanyol were forced to react, and began to take steps forward. After a few scrappy minutes, they then showed sufficient signs of recovery.
Edu Expósito was put through against Agirrezabala, but was knocked off-balance in the move and couldn’t finish.
Dolan put in a cross, which Puado also failed to reach, and the captain himself had a clear chance, smothered twice by defender Tárrega.
Cabrera, with two headers practically in succession, also threatened without success.
Espanyol quickly equalised with another set piece. This time, Cabrera was on target after another good delivery from Edu Expósito.
However, the joy lasted only a few minutes, as Valencia took the lead again from a corner of their own.
Despite all the adversity, RCD Espanyol drew on their spirit. Kike missed off a textbook counterattack, and Puado could have scored after another strong attacking move.
The referee decided to ignore a clear penalty on Edu Expósito, and the game seemed set to end in defeat. That was until Puado popped up late on, reaching a header across from Roberto Fernández to level -to the delight of the fans.
The game ended 2-2, and RCD Espanyol picked up another point at home.
