Match Report: Misfortune in Seville for RCD Espanyol
Los Pericos lose 2-1 to Sevilla FC
RCD Espanyol suffered a cruel turnaround at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan on LaLiga Matchday 35, as two late goals from Sevilla FC denied them a share of the points.
There was a fantastic atmosphere in Seville, despite the downpour in the hours leading up to the game. Following a delay at the start because of an issue with VAR, things got underway with Sevilla coming out at full speed, as expected. However, it was Romero who gave the first warning with a dangerous attempt.
The minutes ticked by. Vargas appealed for a penalty after going down in the box, and Dmitrovic made a crucial save in a move that initially appeared to be offside. However, the best chance of the first 45 minutes fell to Edu Expósito, whose shot from outside the area forced a stellar save from the home goalkeeper.
After the break, another 45 heart-stopping minutes awaited. Luis García brought on Alexis Sánchez, and the Chilean capitalised on a moment of hesitation inside the RCD Espanyol box to score. However VAR ruled out the goal for a clear offside.
Tyrhys Dolan had a moment of brilliance to break the deadlock. He controlled the ball, then struck it to force a save from the goalkeeper, and then reloaded to score the rebound and make it 0-1.
RCD Espanyol had to defend their narrow lead and make the most of any attack.
Castrín, who had a clear chance a few minutes earlier, took his second opportunity, levelling for Sevilla.
The final stretch was a constant back-and-forth affair, with both teams searching for the win. Sevilla’s Akor Adams took advantage of a move on the edge of the box to score the decisive second goal for his side in stoppage time, making it 2-1.
Espanyol tried to react until the very last second, and had an appeal for a possible penalty on Calero turned down in a chaotic finale, but missed out on points in cruel fashion.
