Match Report: Kike García strike earns point against Oviedo
Los Pericos draw 1-1 in their Monday night fixture
RCD Espanyol played out a 1-1 draw with Real Oviedo on LaLiga Matchday 27, in a Monday night game held at the RCDE Stadium. Having gone behind within the opening ten minutes, Manolo González' men scored through Kike Garcia before half time to share the points.
In honour of International Women's Day, match announcer Alexandra Campoy, and Claudia Barrientos, the guitarist who accompanied the club anthem over the PA system, had starring roles
The match began at a high tempo, with the home side creating the first chances. However, it was the visitors who took the lead early on with a goal from Reina, as he pounced on a rebound inside the box.
Far from being discouraged, Espanyol maintained their momentum and grew in their control of play, creating clear opportunities that Aaron Escandell thwarted, denying Carlos Romero and Tyrhys Dolan -twice.
The persistence paid off in the 35th minute. Ngonge, making a run down the right flank, found Kike García in the heart of the penalty area with a cross. The striker, with clinical efficiency, made it 1-1 with his sixth goal in LaLiga this term, restoring parity to the scoreline before halftime.
After the restart, the script for the game remained the same, as Espanyol relentlessly pursued a second goal. Dolan and Romero came close to finding one early in the second half, while Pere Milla had the ball in the back of the net -although the goal was ruled out for offside.
Oviedo slowed the game down with their low block, but Espanyol continued to press, and Roberto forced another save from Escandell with a header.
Espanyol kept up the pressure, dominating the match and creating the best chances. But from their 28 shots, a solitary goal was not enough to claim the win.
