González: "We want to get back to winning ways"
The coach looks at Saturday's game against Valencia CF
“We try to define the season by setting objectives. To reach the summit of Everest, you first have to reach base camp,” said Manolo González in his pre-match press conference ahead of the game against Valencia CF. The coach commented on his side's recent dip in results, despite some solid showings.
“We analyse and work from the perspective of the team's performance. The truth is, we haven't done well in front of goal in the last three games. We've conceded goals when the opponents have had few chances, and deserved more than in other games -for example, the day we beat Sevilla. We're calm and we want to get back to winning ways.”
Regarding this Saturday's opponents, he notes that “Valencia CF have one of the best coaches in LaLiga. They're a well-organised team, with a clear identity and quality players who can decide a match at any moment.”
The current situation in the winter transfer market was also a major focus of the press conference, but the coach insisted that “the club are working and trying to bring in players. It's not easy, but those who come in must help the team between now and the end of the season. They must be able to be starters, and provide a boost in quality. But there are three-way negotiations needed for moves to happen: between the two clubs and the player himself.”
Addressing the team's current situation after two defeats and a draw in the last trio of games he pointed out that “there are times in the season when you're in better or worse form, but all of that has to be analysed without getting carried away. It doesn't make sense to make seven changes between two games. That wouldn't be good. It would signal a change of direction.”
"My only goal is to finish as high up the table as possible. The first thing is to avoid relegation, and then, if we can finish tenth, then that's better than twelfth. It won't be a down to a lack of ambition.”
