González: "Until safety is definite, we won't breathe easy"
The coach assures that his side will stay switched on against Valencia CF
Named LaLiga's Coach of the Month for April, Manolo González looks to mastermind another victory in the competition when RCD Espanyol face Valencia CF this Tuesday. Ahead of the midweek matchday, he spoke to the media on Monday afternoon.
"I never preemptively expect a draw, and the players are very aware of the reality of the situation. In the dressing room they know we're not safe, and that there's still a lot to be done. Until safety is definite, we won't breathe easy," he commented.
"Valencia CF are coming off a good dynamic in terms of their play and their results. We're going to a ground where the crowd push their team hard, and we know the importance of the match, but we also think that, by doing things right, we can win at any stadium."
"They've improved defensively and have shown that they're a squad built to not be at the bottom. But we're also in good form, and we hope our run lasts as long as we can make it. I don't aim for, nor do I ever seek, a draw. We go into games with the aim of winning, but everything depends on how the match unfolds. Right now, I'm only targetting a win."
The coach revealed that one of the reasons for the team's improvement has been that the players "have shown commitment from within. We've taken a step forward, and that, combined with the support from the fans, makes the atmosphere more positive. I think it's time for people to enjoy themselves a little more; whilst we're not safe yet, the team are giving it their all and leaving everything out there on the pitch."
Finally, regarding the award LaLiga gave to him after a fan vote, he noted that "it's an individual award, but I understand it as a recognition for the group: Both for the staff and the players. I'm very happy because it recognises the good work that we've done."
