González: "The team did a very good job throughout the game"
The RCD Espanyol coach assesses the 1-1 draw at home
RCD Espanyol coach, Manolo González, said in his post-match press conference that the performance against Athletic Club in a 1-1 draw had been positive.
“The team did a very good job throughout the game. It's a shame about the goal from a corner, that was scored off a rebound. It was a very difficult match due to the level of the opponents. I'm happy with the team. In the first half of the season we would have probably lost this match. The changes we made to take off Urko and Pol upset our plans a little, but they were fatigued,” he said.
“The team are much better mentally and competitively. I'm happy because we're getting better every day, and we must continue along this same path. We must try to achieve the objective before the end of the season, if possible."
"The opponents sometimes make you not be the protagonist,” he added.
Regarding Roberto Fernández's goal, he indicated that “Roberto believed in himself on that move, and he went all out for it. It's the player's merit. We forced a physically superior team into difficulties and the match was hard fought. Picking up points is important,” he explained.
Regarding alleged racist insults made towards Athletic Club's Iñaki Williams, the Espanyol coach pointed out that “they do not represent the Espanyol fans. Controlling a person is very difficult at a football ground, but this must be eradicated.”
