Gónzalez: "Our base has to be avoiding mistakes"
The coach previews the game against Atletico Madrid
In his pre-match press conference ahead of the opening game of the LaLiga season, RCD Espanyol coach Manolo González once again expressed that he maintains a clear idea of what he wants and expects from the team.
"The team that comes out tomorrow will compete well. We have a very demanding match against opponents -in Atletico Madrid- who have to fight for the LaLiga title and who has strengthened their squads well,” he told journalists.
"We have to avoid making mistakes, as a base for what we do. We had a good preseason, but we have to take a step forward and be more competitive with each week that passes. We still have a long way to go, but we're coming into the match in better shape than last year away against Valladolid. Tomorrow we'll see the reality of the situation. I'm sure we can do well, but we have to know how we should play this match."
For González, the squad is still being finalised, and his goal is to secure more signings.
“I hope at least three new players will arrive, and if it's four, then perfect. It would allow for more competition to improve the team's potential.”
He also stated his dissatisfaction with the fact that three matchdays will be played with the transfer market still open.
“The normal thing would be for it to close before the season even starts, but you have to get used to it. We can't spend 40 million euros on a player, and that drags out the negotiations.”
