González: "If RCD Espanyol call you, there is no need for any other option"
The coach talks about his contract extension
Manolo González reacted to his contract extension -made official on Tuesday- with his customary enthusiasm, expressing his commitment "to continue making progress."
"I rejected more substantial financial offers to take over Espanyol B, and I don't regret it. If RCD Espanyol call you, there is no need for any other option."
He commented that the team have started preseason training very well, and that "the players have arrived back very convinced of themselves, and eager to have a good year."
"Our first objective must be survival, and if you're safe by Matchday 30, it means you can fight for bigger goals."
He also stated that in modern football it's "difficult" to remain in the dugout for long spells, but he hopes to achieve it.
"If I have to leave at any time, I hope people have good memories of my work. I don't want to be the centre of attention for anything. Football belongs to the players, the season ticket holders, and the fans. What I like is coaching and staying as unnoticed as possible, so the players continue to grow."
"If you haven't been a top-level player, becoming an elite coach is like winning the Euromillions. I took advantage of my opportunity. It was like leaping without a safety net, but I've managed to pull it off."
Finally, looking back on his career leading up to his taking charge, he noted that "I've learned not to judge when unfamiliar with something. The Espanyol players have taught me what being a good professional is. For example, Sergi Gómez has influenced me as a professional because, although he didn't play much, he's been an example in every way."
