González: “There's still one more step to go”
The coach assesses the win against Athletic Club
Espanyol picked up a vital victory against Athletic Club in the final midweek round of LaLiga games, and after the match, coach Manolo González reflected on the first win of 2026 for his team.
"The players in the dressing room are very happy. It's a dose of immense energy. The players are very happy. I haven’t a bad word to say about them. They have always believed in everything that we do."
The coach also admitted the emotional burden the match carried.
"This second half of the season is a situation that cannot be explained, it’s really exhausting. I felt a great relief today. But there is one more step left to take still. The team have never dropped their heads, here we took an important win and it gives us a boost for the two remaining games.”
One of the great protagonists of the evening was the RCDE Stadium. González underlined the role of the fans and the confidence they transmit when the team need something extra.
"The atmosphere is fantastic and the fans get behind the team. The fans are very important. They give confidence to the players and give everything to push them like they did today.”
Finally, the coach switched the focus to the next game against Osasuna, saying that “In Pamplona we can’t speculate. We have to go there with belief and be brave to try to get for the game.”
